Holiday Shutdown Checklist: Prevent Pests While Your Business Is Closed

Posted on: December 2, 2025, in Blog

When your business shuts down for the December break, warm weather and empty buildings create the perfect opportunity for pests. A quick pre-holiday clean can save you from opening the doors in January to an infestation.

1. Clear All Food Sources

  • Empty all bins
  • Clean fridges
  • Wipe desks, kitchens and counters
  • Check drawers for forgotten snacks or mugs

2. Clean Kitchens & Eating Areas

  • Clean under appliances
  • Mop floors
  • Wash or discard old cloths and sponges
  • Run the dishwasher empty with detergent

3. Store All Consumables Properly

Seal tea, coffee, sugar and other consumables in airtight containers and pack them away.

4. Remove All Rubbish & Recycling

  • Empty bins
  • Clear recycling and cardboard
  • Disinfect bin areas

5. Fix Leaks & Moisture Issues

Check taps, pipes, aircons and damp cupboards. Moisture attracts cockroaches and fish moths.

6. Secure Entry Points

Inspect for:

  • Gaps under doors
  • Holes around cables or pipes
  • Damaged vents or mesh
  • Rodent activity

7. Reduce Clutter

Remove piles of boxes, cardboard, paper and unused stock that create hiding places for pests.

8. Switch Off Responsibly

Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances, but keep essential security lighting on. Reduce outside lighting that attracts insects.

9. Prioritise Regular Pest Inspections

Routine pest-control inspections throughout the year are one of the best ways to prevent unwanted surprises โ€” especially after long shutdown periods.
If your business returns in January and you notice any signs of activity, schedule a New Year inspection to deal with problems early.
