How to catch and release a spider

Posted on: October 17, 2024, in Blog

Although spiders can be unsettling, having one in your home can actually offer several benefits. Spiders are excellent for pest control, as they primarily feed on insects that are considered pests, such as cockroaches.

However, some spiders can be harmful, and many people are not eager to share their living space with these eight-legged creatures. If you need to remove a single spider, it’s better to catch and release it rather than kill it.

Here’s how you can safely catch and release a spider:

Step 1:

Prepare yourself before approaching the spider. Ensure you have a large enough container or cup and a sturdy piece of paper or cardboard ready. If the spider is located high up, use a stable ladder to reach it.

Step 2:

Now comes the tricky part. While you may be afraid of the spider, remember that it’s likely more frightened of you. Be gentle to avoid startling the spider and causing it to jump. Hold the container in one hand and use the cardboard to carefully guide the spider into the container. Once the spider is near the containerโ€™s opening, gently cover it with the container.

Step 3:

With the spider safely inside the container, secure it for transport outside. Slightly lift the container to slide the paper between the wall and the container. Now, the spider is safely contained and ready to be moved outside.

Step 4:

Take the spider outside to release it. Choose a spot that offers the spider a good chance of survival, such as bushes or thick undergrowth.

Final Step:

Once you’ve found a suitable release spot, gently place the container down and lift the cardboard. The spider might be hesitant to leave, so don’t force it out. Simply leave the container and allow the spider to exit at its own pace.

While most spiders in South Africa are harmless, some individuals may have allergic reactions to spider bites and could become seriously ill.
